Ionian Islands Guide

The Greek Ionian Islands are situated off the west coast of Greece, with the exception of Kythira to the south, and comprise the islands of Corfu, Paxos (Paxi), Lefkas, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos (Zante) and Kythira, as well as numerous smaller islands.

These beautiful islands are steeped in history, and were inhabited as early as 1200 B.C. The influence of the past occupation of the Ionian islands by the British and the French is reflected even today in the islands' culture, giving the islands a very different feel to the Aegean islands.

The most well-known of the islands are Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos which are popular with holiday-makers, particularly in the summer months. Each of the Ionian Islands offers a unique character and charm; the varied sceneries and characters of the islands means that there is an Ionian island to suit every taste and budget.
